The South African outfit, the Southern Guards, will be eager to lay down an early marker as the LIV Golf season tees off this week in Saudi Arabia.

LIV Riyadh launches a jam-packed 2026 season, one that promises to be a landmark year for the rebel league. Not only does it usher in a fresh campaign, but it will also see LIV Golf visit South Africa for the first time later this year, a major milestone for the tour and its growing local fan base.

The Southern Guards team features a formidable all-South African line-up, made up of former Bloemfontein professional Dean Burmester, alongside Louis Oosthuizen, Charl Schwartzel and Branden Grace. The quartet recently unveiled a bold rebrand ahead of the 2026 season, signalling a new era filled with change, ambition, and a historic homecoming.

One of the most significant changes for LIV Golf going forward is the shift to a 72-hole format, played over four days. This marks a departure from the traditional 54-hole, three-day structure and is expected to introduce new tactical elements and added drama to the competition.

Burmester believes Riyadh is the perfect place to get the season rolling.

“I’m really excited to get the season going. Starting in Riyadh under the lights is always interesting - it’s a different challenge for the players and it makes for a really exciting spectacle for the viewers,” said Burmester.

“The course was in great shape when we played there late last year, so I’m expecting the same again. With four rounds this season and an extra day of golf, there should be plenty of birdies and a few new dynamics coming into play.”

Playing under floodlights adds a unique twist to the contest, and while it delivers a stunning visual spectacle, Burmester admits it can also be daunting.

“The lights definitely add a unique challenge. If you miss it badly, you can lose a ball in the dark, and the shadows can be tricky - sometimes there are four shadows on the green, which makes judging slope and speed difficult. You really need to practise under the lights.”

With the team’s recent rebrand, Burmester says it offers the perfect opportunity to hit the reset button and start the year on a clean slate.

“We’re really excited about the rebrand and the vision going forward. The Ubuntu philosophy, the ethos we’re building, and what the rhino represents - its strength, fortitude and even its plight - all help define who we are as a team.

“The documentary brought a lot of positive feedback and we’ve seen a real uplift in public support. Heading into Riyadh, the four of us want to put on a good show. The fans deserve to see us competing regularly, and hopefully we’ll be well prepared heading into South Africa.”

The action in Saudi Arabia tees off on Wednesday, with the first round getting under way at 17:15.
