Oliver Bekker delivered a superb final round of 67 to storm up the leaderboard and claim a two-shot victory at Durban Country Club on Sunday to be crowned as the new Durban Open champion.

With the tournament reduced to 54 holes due to adverse weather, Bekker leaned on his experience to produce a composed closing round featuring seven birdies and just two dropped shots, finishing at 16-under-par overall.

Sweden’s Christofer Blomstrand secured second place on 14-under after signing for a final-round 71.

Bekker’s triumph continues an impressive run of form, despite recently relocating to Australia in an effort to ease into a less demanding schedule. Instead, the wins have kept coming, with this latest success arriving just four months after his victory on the PGA Tour of Australasia.

“It feels a bit surreal - since moving to Australia, I’ve probably spent more time moving furniture than playing golf,” said Bekker.

“I missed the cut last week, so I didn’t come in with big expectations - and sometimes that’s when things just click.”

This marks his second title of the season and highlights a strong patch in his career. Bekker credited subtle adjustments to his game for the turnaround.

“I’ve been working with someone in Stellenbosch, focusing on the small details and trusting what comes naturally. It’s starting to pay off. I haven’t tried to change too much, and having experience on my side definitely helps.”

The final round produced plenty of drama, with several players challenging for the lead. Spain’s Pablo Ereno was firmly in contention before a costly eight on the par-four 17th derailed his chances.

Bekker admitted he had to fight his way into contention after a slow start but found momentum at the right time.

“I didn’t get going early, but then I started hitting some really good shots. I felt 17-under might be enough. When I saw someone had reached 16-under, I knew it was going to take something special.

“I managed to hole a few key putts, and standing on 18 I knew I needed a birdie to stay in it. When I checked the leaderboard afterwards, that’s when it really sank in.”

The win carried added emotional weight, with his wife watching from Australia and a recent personal loss still fresh in his mind.

“It meant a lot to speak to my wife straight after. I’ve also lost a very close friend recently. It reminds you how short life is and how important it is to appreciate moments like this.”

The week the focus shifts to the Cape Winelands for the playing on the 115th South African Open which will be played at the Stellenbosch Golf Club.
