CANSA supports South Africans throughout their cancer journey─── 12:00 Thu, 01 Oct 2026
As part of OFM’s Pinktober coverage, Pulane Nel-Sekepe speaks with Makoma Roalona, Head of Sustainability at CANSA, about the organisation’s role in supporting people affected by cancer.
As a leader in the fight against cancer in South Africa since 1931, the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) works towards a cancer-free society through research, public education, advocacy and support for people affected by cancer.
CANSA provides people facing cancer and their loved ones with access to information, practical assistance and emotional support throughout their cancer journey. The organisation also works to protect patients’ rights to healthcare and advocates for stronger cancer-control measures.
Roalona explains how funding plays an important role in allowing CANSA to continue providing these services, while also helping to create a less stressful environment for patients who are already dealing with the physical and emotional challenges of breast cancer.

CANSA’s support extends beyond the medical side of cancer, recognising that patients and their families may also need practical and emotional assistance along the way.
People affected by cancer can contact CANSA directly to find out what support is available to them. Families should note that CANSA is not automatically informed when someone receives a cancer diagnosis or treatment, and permission from the patient is required before CANSA can contact them.
