Bloemfontein - While the Vaal Dam is still over 100 percent full, authorities believe the situation is stabilising.

Water Affairs Acting Director General Tony Balzer says the Vaal Dam is at 108 percent this morning, with 995 cubic metres per second being discharged from the seven sluices currently open.

He says Bloemhof Dam levels have increased to 91 percent from 85 percent yesterday, and they have upped the outflow to 575 cubic metres per second.

Communities downstream from Bloemhof are being urged to remain cautious.

Balzer says neither the Gariep nor Van der Kloof Dams are spilling over at the moment and says there is no danger of floods on the Orange River.

Despite the river still being “stable” at this stage, Balzer says residents must be cautious.
