Bloemhof - The contaminated water in Bloemhof that has caused the death of a baby and seen at least 200 people treated for diarrhoea this week may have spilled over to Christiana.

Lekwa-Teemane municipal spokesperson, Oatile Letebele says while there has been no confirmation that Christiana's water supply has been contaminated, residents are being urged to take caution.

Schools have been shut down and back-up water tanks have run dry in Bloemhof since a sewage contamination.

By late yesterday the water had been restored but residents of Boitumelong township said it smelled and was not drinkable.

Letebele says while the water was discoloured initially, it normalised overnight.

A baby boy died on Wednesday after contracting severe diarrhoea from the contamination.

The municipality said claims of a cholera outbreak had not yet been confirmed. The results of tests carried out to determine the cause of the diarrhoea are expected today.

Letebele says while Bloemhof's water system has been cleaned, he urged residents to continue to boil water before use.
