Potchefstroom man dies after brawl─── DANE BEISHEIM 12:31 Wed, 10 Sep 2014
Potchefstroom - A Potchefstroom man has died after being involved in a barroom brawl at the weekend.
According to North West spokesperson Mvula Chaka, Quentin van Niekerk was declared brain-dead this morning, and life support machines helping him breathe were disconnected.
This comes after Van Niekerk was involved in an altercation with suspect Deon Zeelie at Hardekool, a local drinking establishment on Saturday evening. Van Niekerk reportedly fell and hit his head on a security gate rail.
When paramedics arrived on scene he was unconscious but breathing on his own. He was taken to Potchefstroom Hospital where doctors diagnosed him with swelling of the brain.
Zeelie has since appeared in court and was released on R500 bail.
Chaka added that in light of Van Niekerk's death this morning the charges against Zeelie will be adjusted from attempted murder to murder.
He will appear in court soon.
