Ficksburg - Two people died and five others were injured in a head-on collision between a truck and a car in the Free State on Friday, paramedics said.
ER24 spokesman Russel Meiring said the accident occurred on the R26, about 18km outside of Ficksburg.
Paramedics arriving on the scene found a car lying on its roof in the middle of the road and a delivery truck a few metres away.
“Debris from both wrecked vehicles was spread across the road for a few metres,” Meiring said.
The body of a male passenger was found next to the car. Six other people were found on the scene with various injuries.
“One of the patients had sustained critical injuries while five others had sustained only minor to moderate injuries,” Meiring said.
Paramedics treated the patients for their injuries and provided the critically injured woman with advanced life support intervention, then transported them to various hospitals.
The critically injured woman succumbed to her injuries while being transported to hospital.
The cause of the collision was not yet known but the authorities were on scene for further investigation, he said.
