Free State policeman's sentencing hearing postponed | News Article

Bloemfontein - The State has requested a life sentence for the former Bloemfontein policeman who stabbed his wife to death at the Pelonomi Hospital.

This was heard during the sentencing procedures in the Bloemfontein High Court on Friday. Jacob Mokanyane's legal counsel, however, asked for a reduced sentence of 12 years.

The court heard there were enough reasons for the court to deviate from the minimum prescribed sentence of 15 years. Arguing in mitigation Mokanyane's counsel told the court that he has shown remorse and he has stated that he wishes he could "undo" his act.

The court further heard that he had received treatment for depression and that he tried to commit suicide. Free State Judge, Corné van Zyl, postponed the matter to 21 September for sentencing.

The court found Mokanyane guilty of murdering his wife in January 2015 at her workplace at Bloemfontein's Pelonomi Hospital. She was stabbed several times in front of her colleagues.
