DA NW wants answers on sinkhole─── DANE BEISHEIM 06:48 Wed, 25 Jan 2017
Stilfontein - The DA in the North West expects feedback from the Director General of Water and Sanitation, Dan Mashitisho, on the ongoing water problems and associated dangers at the water storage facility in Stilfontein by next week.
DA shadow Deputy Minister of Water and Sanitation, Leon Basson, says he once again wrote a letter to Mashitisho this week demanding feedback regarding the emergence of a sinkhole close to the facility in Jan van Riebeeck Road. Part of the N12 had to be closed.
Basson says damaged water leakages at the water storage facility were responsible for the sinkhole due to water loosening the dolomite rock. He adds this has compromised the structural strength of surrounding infrastructure, posing a huge safety risk to residents and their property. “I’ve been informed that the investigation has been completed. They are waiting for the minister to sign off on the report and the report will be forwarded to me within a few days,” Basson added.
Should there be loss of life or property due to a lethargic response on this matter, Basson says the DA will hold the DG of Water and Sanitation, the Matlosana Mayor and the Municipal Manager personally liable.
