#UFS confirms the arrest of students and fire at the RAG farm─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 15:05 Thu, 26 Oct 2017
The University of the Free State confirms that a fire broke out at the Bloemfontein campus’ RAG farm during the early hours of this morning.
This, after the recent student protests over a possible fee hike for the 2018 academic year. University spokesperson, Lacea Loader, says arson is suspected and the matter is currently under police investigation. She, however, adds that the building is not completely destroyed and no injuries have been reported. Loader further confirms that two students were also arrested this morning following allegations that they attempted to light a fire next to the Campus Main Building.
She says the two incidents are both under investigation.
Loader adds that the situation on the Bloemfontein and Qwaqwa campuses is being monitored closely, and the necessary contingency plans remain in place to ensure the continuation of the exams.
She says the safety of staff, students, and the safeguarding of university property still remains a priority.
