Kroonstad train accident and others cost millions | News Article

The Shosholoza Meyl train accident near Kroonstad in which 22 people died and other accidents cost the railway giant Prasa millions of rands.

This is according to an answer to a written question in parliament.

Transport Minister Blade Nzimande said the train accident between Kroonstad and Hennenman is one of the accidents that lead to a loss of more than R27.8 million suffered by Prasa during the 2017/18 financial year.

This is almost double the financial loss Prasa suffered during the previous financial year.

In all the accidents this year a total of eight Shosholoza Meyl coaches were damaged and/or wrecked.

Nzimande explained in his answer on a question from DA MP, Mbulelo Bara, that the number of coaches that were involved in accidents are in stark contrast to the 190 that were lost due to vandalism or theft.
