One of the intended beneficiaries in the Estina Dairy Farm Project in Vrede, was found dead inside his shack just outside Vrede.

According to a statement issued by Free State police, Philemon Ngwenya’s body was found badly battered on Friday by his family members, and a murder case was subsequently registered.

Police said that the motive of killing is unknown and no arrests have been made. Meanwhile, in a statement issued by the DA in the province, it was revealed that Ngwena was one of the more outspoken intended beneficiaries of the controversial dairy farm project, which is alleged to have cost more than R250 million.

DA Leader in the Free State, Patricia Kopane, revealed in the statement that Ngwenya had in an earlier news report this year spoken out on what happened in dubious dealings relating to the Estina Dairy Farm project he was supposed to have benefited from. It is reported that Ngwenya had said he and other farmers that were earmarked for this project did not even receive R2 from those leading the project.

While the police in their statement did not reveal how Ngwenya died, the DA allege that he was shot in the head.

This is not the first time someone who is forthright about the dairy farm scandal dies as Moses Tshake, an auditor at the Free State Department of Agriculture, was also killed in 2013 - presumably linked to his whistle-blowing on the scandal.
