This is according to Moses Mokhele, a councillor in the area, working for the Democratic Alliance in the area. Mokhele further says that the ruling party is also failing residents even with the bucket system as even this system is not properly managed, as residents of Ward 5 and 6 in the Tambo township endure several health hazards, including exposure to illnesses such as cholera and tuberculosis owing to the party’s failure to properly collect the buckets.

Mokhele added that the situation was now placing parents of young children in the area under strain as they now had to constantly monitor their children to ensure that they do not play near the buckets, lest they may fall into one. He also said that the municipality also faced challenges with its sewerage systems as sewage could be seen flowing and also alleged that residents can go for months without water owing to burst pipes caused by aged infrastructure. He further said this was a violation of human rights and revealed that the party has written to the South African Human Rights Commission requesting them to investigate and come up with recommendations that can be implemented by the municipality.

OFM News contacted the office of Nthateng Maoke, Executive Mayor of the municipality, and was informed that a meeting was currently underway where the municipality’s water problems were being discussed. Maoke’s personal assistant, King Mokoena, requested OFM News to, after the meeting, try the office of the municipal mayor for a response on the allegations made by the opposition party. The Setsotso Local Municipality is a part of the Thabo Mofutsanyane District Municipality and covers four towns, namely: Ficksburg, Clocolan, Marquard, and Senekal.
