Port Elizabeth - Plant fossils dating back millions of years which were found during excavation for road works around Grahamstown will be housed at the Albany Museum.
Paleontologist and Albany Museum scholar, Dr Robert Gess, and the SA National Roads Agency Limited today unveiled a treasure trove of fossils unearthed a fortnight ago during excavations for road works on the N2.
Gess says most of the plant types that were found during the recent excavation have not been discovered before.
He has already found plant and fish fossils on Waterloo Farm in the Grahamstown area.
In 2013 while working on his post doctoral thesis, Gess found a fossilised scorpion which he reportedly described as revolutionary.
Gess says that the most recent find may even predate those found on Waterloo Farm.
