Lockdown has forced many across the globe to change routine. This means some have time on their hands or more opportunity to upskill than before. Now anyone with an internet connection can access courses, some that have been made available for free,


Ever wanted to study at Harvard? Now you can. For free. BusinessTech reports that Harvard University is offering 63 free online courses at a time when many countries have been forced into lockdown.

These course can be accessed here, they take between a week to 12 weeks to complete, and include the following subjects: programming, health and medicine, social sciences, computer science,art and design, and business.

One such course is entitled: Entrepreneurship in Emerging Economies.In this course, which lasts six-weeks or 3-5 hours a week, you can ‘explore how entrepreneurship and innovation tackle complex social problems in emerging economies’.

Another, CS50: Introduction to Computer Science,will give you a ‘broad and robust understanding of computer science and programming’

The course would need around 10-20 hours per week for 11 weeks.

Following the extension of the nationwide lockdown in South Africa, online global education institution Shaw Academy is offering four weeks free access to its selection of courses to anyone affected by the coronavirus (Covid-19). Its aim is to give people an easy and flexible way of reskilling or upskilling during this turbulent time.

James Egan, Founder and CEO of Shaw Academy, told BizCommunity that with the coronavirus outbreak forcing more and more people to stay indoors, education providers are in a unique position to provide something that can benefit people during this difficult period. This offer to all South Africans comes following Shaw Academy’s recent expansion of its presence in the country, where it currently employs over 50 educators, and student support managers and technical support staff, with a view to doubling this figure by the end of the year.

Udemy is another online learning platform with 100 000 online courses, many of which are offered for free. The courses available for free are wide-ranging and include lessons on social media management, personal development, computer science,entrepreneurship, blogging and many others.

Good old Google Garage also offers some interesting short courses and they are certified. Perfect for startups.
