Record breaking mohair sale this week | News Article

Port Elizabeth - Mohair growers are smiling all the way to the bank after the second last sale of the season re-wrote the record books.

This is according to a market analysis report by CMW Mohair Manager Pierre van der Vyver, who says the 6th Mohair Sale closed with a “best ever” sales average of R230,24/kg. The average price increased by 12%, ranging from a rise of 9% for kid hair to as much as 13% for young goat hair.

Van der Vyver says the main drivers included the exchange rate and improved demand set against low stock levels. He says the quality of the offerings was also exceptionally high.

Van der Vyver says such a big average increase is unusual and should set the alarm bells ringing. He adds, however, that processing plants appear to have been caught off guard by the limited stock as demand improved towards the end of the season.

The last sale takes place in Port Elizabeth on December 1.
