Cradock - A maize farmer in Cradock has not only joined the 20-ton maize club but may have broken the record for the highest yield per hectare ever in South Africa.
Landbou.com reports that Erich Cloete of the farm Sanctuary in the Cradock District was announced as the winner in the annual Cradock Seed Distributors 20-ton Maize Club Competition.
His yield of 23,92 tons per hectare is more than 1,4 tons higher than last year’s winner.
According to the report, 22 farmers from the Fish River Valley participated this year.
Second place went to Isak van der Merwe of Kransfontein, Colesberg, with a bit more than 21,7 t/ha. Hot on his heels was André Marais of Roodewal in the southern region with just over 20,5 t/ha.
