Weather SA pleads for caution | News Article

The South African Weather Services meteorologist, Puseletso Mofokeng says a lot of rain is expected this season.

He encourages people to take precautions, and also not seek shelter under trees when there are thunderstorms.

A woman from Qwaqwa in the Free State has died, after being struck by lightning during a thunderstorm earlier this week. James Moloi told OFM News his wife, the 50-year-old Aletta Moloi was out doing shopping with her daughter, Refiloe, when the thunderstorm hit. Aletta died on the scene, while her daughter survived after sustaining minor injuries.

Mofokeng adds that it's not advisable to walk in open space during lightning as the tallest object is likely to attract lightning.

He further says people must not touch each other during lightning as this may cause more unnecessary deaths.
