'Municipal officials are underqualified'─── 11:51 Mon, 19 Apr 2021
South Africa’s municipalities are in severe financial distress, with the situation getting worse year after year, says the acting minister in the Presidency, Khumbudzo Ntshavheni.
In response to parliamentary questions, Ntshavheni said 47% of all 2 747 senior municipal officials, as well as those in charge of finances, do not meet competency levels, when replying to questions from DA MP Cilliers Brink.
This indicates a lack of skills and competencies to do their job.
A total of 160 municipalities are in financial distress, carrying R132 billion in debt.
