Metsimaholo leadership woes in the spotlight | News Article

The state of the Free State's Metsimaholo Municipality has once again come under scrutiny.

This, as members of the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) discussed its ability to deliver services. The coalition-led municipality has over the years drawn controversy over its political infights, and several motions of no confidence to oust SACP Mayor Lindiwe Tshongwe. The municipality is said to be failing to resolve its leadership and financial woes despite being under administration. The sitting led by the Chairperson of the Select Committee on Cooperative Governance, China Dodovu, has on Monday heard how the municipality still grapples with governance issues. The ANC and the F4SD raised concerns about how several members of the intervention team are now shortlisted for vacant senior positions.

Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs MEC Thembeni Nxangisa has admitted that two members sent to assist the municipality have applied for the position of the CFO and Chief Director.

Whilst oppositions parties have argued that this is unconstitutional and indicative of a team that only came to the municipality for their own good, Nxangisa told the Hhouse it is well within their rights as South African citizens to apply for any vacant position.

Samwu' Tiisetso Mahlatsi, on the other hand, told the committee they have noted slight improvements in the municipality since that intervention by the provincial government and would vouch for it to be continued, despite a few challenges presented before the Committee.
