The Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) says there is light at the end of the tunnel for the water woes of Free State municipalities.

The Nala Municipality – that includes Bothaville and Wesselsbron – and Matjhabeng Municipality – that includes Welkom and Virginia – have been experiencing water interruptions. This is because of their outstanding debt to their bulk water supplier, Sedibeng Water board. The ministry indicated in a written response on a question tabled in Parliament that talks between the water board and the municipalities on an affordable payment agreement is ongoing.

Municipalities in the Free State, including Mangaung Metro, have been defaulting on their payment agreement with their outstanding debt running into billions. OFM News previously reported that Sedibeng Water Board has indicated that they are experiencing cash flow problems because of the outstanding municipal debt and the entity struggled to pay employees’ salaries in time.
