Australia drew first blood in the three-Test series against the Proteas being played down-under.

It was the Proteas first outing since their disappointing showing at the Netball World Cup in Cape Town where they failed to reach the semi-finals.

The world champions lived up to their reputation and took early control of the Test and held a 31-21 lead after the second quarter.

They went on to win the Test 62-43.

Australia stretched their unbeaten run against South Africa to 43 wins.

The Proteas coach, Norma Plummer, who hails from Australia, said despite the defeat to the world champions, there is no reason to be disappointed.

“I think we did very well, considering that we did not have any games since World Cup,” said Plummer.

“The players stepped up and did exceptionally well - I am not disappointed at all.  I am impressed with how everyone stepped up and raised their hands.

“For the remaining two Tests, we will keep building and coming strong.

“We have a bunch of great players who just need to be properly coached and exposed to what is out there.”

The second Test will be played on Saturday in Hobart.
