Maartens joins the Pumas─── MORGAN PIEK 18:36 Mon, 02 Mar 2020
The Toyota Cheetahs have lost the services of the flanker Daniel Maartens. The versatile loose-forward has moved back to his home town, Nelspruit, where he will be playing for the Pumas in the SuperSport Rugby Challenge and as well as the Currie Cup.
While small in stature by modern standards, Maartens, is a speedy player and good at the breakdown. His speed has even seen him being used on the wing, and his most famous outing in the position was when he scored a try for the University of the Free State Shimlas during the 2015 Varsity Cup final when they beat their rivals, the North-West University Pukke in Bloemfontein.
Maartens has represented the Cheetahs in the PRO14 as well as the Free State Cheetahs in the Currie Cup.
He has however enjoyed limited time on the park at the Cheetahs, and this is largely due to injuries, while he also had to compete for a back row jersey with the likes of Junior Pokomela, Gerhard Olivier and more recently, Jasper Wiese.
Another one of his former Cheetahs teammates, Ali Mgijima, joined the Pumas towards the end of last year.
