Cheetahs geared for Bulls and Europe─── MORGAN PIEK 11:03 Wed, 27 Nov 2024
“The excitement is massive, and the guys are really looking forward to it. You can see it in the way they’re training. Everyone is pushing hard, and now they’re really looking forward to it.”
The Toyota Cheetahs have been putting significant focus on their set-piece as they prepare for their EPCR Challenge Cup campaign, which kicks off next week.
The rainy conditions in Bloemfontein on Tuesday provided valuable experience in adapting to the type of weather they may encounter, although the artificial playing surfaces they will face in Europe will present a new challenge for many of their players.
The Cheetahs’ first match will be against the French Top 14 side, Perpignan. Known for their powerful pack, the French team’s physicality excites the Cheetahs, who are eager to test themselves.
Head coach Izak van der Westhuizen shared his optimism with OFM Sport, noting the palpable excitement within the squad as their flight north approaches.

“The excitement is massive, and the guys are really looking forward to it,” said Van der Westhuizen. “You can see it in the way they’re training. Everyone is pushing hard, and now they’re really looking forward to it.”
Playing on artificial or hybrid pitches will be a new experience for many Cheetahs players. However, some have already gained experience in this area, and their knowledge will be vital.
Van der Westhuizen mentioned that the players have been preparing by discussing the proper boots and studs for artificial turf, ensuring they’re ready for the slippery conditions.

“We have a couple of guys who’ve played on artificial turf, and they’ve shared their tips with the team. We’ve discussed what boots to use and how to adjust to the slippery surface,” he explained.
“Today’s rain actually helped us get used to some of that. The older players will provide guidance, but the younger guys will need to learn quickly as well.”
On Thursday, the Cheetahs will further fine-tune their preparations with a warm-up match against the Bulls in Pretoria. While the Bulls’ top players are in Ireland for a URC game against Connacht, the Pretoria-based side still boasts plenty of depth, and the Cheetahs can expect a strong challenge.
‘It’s more about what we want to do and what we aim to get out of the game’
Van der Westhuizen highlighted that the focus for the Cheetahs would be on refining their own game and making the most of their preseason work.
“The Bulls have a huge squad depth, so it’ll still be a good challenge. For us, it’s more about what we want to do and what we aim to get out of the game,” he said.
The warm-up game between the Cheetahs and Bulls will kick off at 15:00 at Loftus Versfeld on Thursday.
