The Toyota Cheetahs have made a major signing following the conclusion of the 2025 Varsity Cup, which was won by the UCT Ikey Tigers on Monday night.
The Toyota Cheetahs have made a major signing following the conclusion of the 2025 Varsity Cup, which was won by the University of Cape Town Ikeys on Monday night.
The Cheetahs have secured the signature of UCT Ikeys winger, Ntokozo Makhaza, who will be returning to his home province. Bethlehem-born Makhaza, who all but single-handedly clinched the Varsity Cup title for UCT, ending an 11-year drought, has been named Player of the Tournament for the second year running.
He put in a phenomenal performance in the final against Maties at the Danie Craven Stadium, scoring 32 points to take his season tally to an impressive 155.
Known for his blistering pace and deadly accurate boot, the 23-year-old offers a versatile skill set that will no doubt add significant value to the Cheetahs squad.
Cheetahs COO, MJ Smith, who is responsible for player recruitment, told OFM Sport that Makhaza is an exciting talent who brings a lot to the table—and they’re confident the Cheetahs can help take his career to the next level.

“The Toyota Cheetahs are really happy to have Ntokozo Makhaza committed to us for the next couple of years,” said Smith, a former Free State flyhalf.
“He’s a prolific points scorer. Everyone knows him for his kicking, but he’s also a fantastic finisher with ball in hand. He defends well, reads the game brilliantly on defence, and of course, when he lines up a kick, he rarely misses.
“We’re thrilled to have him on our books. We believe we can add real value to his career, and he’ll definitely bring a lot to the Cheetahs.
A brace for Ntokozo Makhaza! The @ikeytigers retake the lead and all their points thus far have come from that man Makhaza. What a player. #NxtLevel #RugbyThatRocks pic.twitter.com/cipmEpVyWA

“He’s a perfect fit for our attacking style of play, and what stands out even more is his commitment—he’s set to finish his studies and earn his degree at the end of the year.
“It’s a great story and a perfect fit for the Cheetahs. We’re very excited.”
OFM Sport understands that the Cheetahs have another Varsity Cup star on their radar, with negotiations currently ongoing.
