South African rugby is mourning the loss of one of its most dynamic and resilient players, Cornal Hendricks, who passed away late on Wednesday evening at the age of 37.

The former Springbok, Toyota Cheetahs, and Bulls backline player reportedly suffered a suspected heart attack, just days before his beloved Boland Cavaliers were set to play in the SA Cup semi-final against the Pumas in Nelspruit.

Hendricks’ sudden passing has sent shockwaves through the rugby community, with tributes pouring in from former teammates, coaches, and fans alike. Known for his pace, power, and humility off the field, Hendricks carved out a remarkable career despite numerous personal and professional challenges.

He first burst onto the scene with Boland in 2008, where his raw talent and natural athleticism quickly earned him recognition. His performances earned him a move to the Cheetahs, where he became a fan favourite in Super Rugby, and later to the Bulls, where he continued to make his mark.

Hendricks also starred for the Blitzboks, where he was a key figure in their international campaigns. His electrifying runs and ability to create something out of nothing made him a standout in the shorter format of the game.

In 2014, Hendricks earned his Springbok debut and went on to earn 12 caps for the national team, scoring five tries and proving himself on the highest stage of the sport. However, his career took a heartbreaking turn when a serious heart condition forced him out of the game for several years, leading to the loss of his professional contracts.

Defying the odds, Hendricks made an inspiring return to rugby in 2019 after receiving medical clearance. He joined the Bulls and quickly became a vital part of their squad, helping them to succeed in the Currie Cup and the United Rugby Championship.

His comeback story was widely celebrated as a testament to his determination and passion for the game.

In 2024, in what many called a “full-circle moment”, Hendricks returned to his roots, rejoining Boland to compete in the SA Cup. Earlier this season, he featured in a memorable clash against his former side, the Cheetahs, in Wellington – a match that now stands as one of his final appearances on the field.

Beyond his on-field exploits, Hendricks was known for his warmth, humility, and willingness to mentor younger players. Many described him as a “gentle giant” whose presence lifted those around him.

Cornal Hendricks’ legacy will live on not only in highlight reels and match statistics but in the hearts of those he inspired with his courage, tenacity, and love for the game. He is survived by his family, friends, and countless teammates who will forever remember the friendly man behind the jersey.
