Winger Ntokozo Makhaza is more motivated than ever to prove himself as he joins the Toyota Cheetahs.

The Free State side recently pulled off a major coup by securing the services of the two-time Varsity Cup Player of the Year from the UCT Ikeys. While his style of play may differ slightly from that of the Cheetahs, there’s a great deal of excitement around his pending arrival in Bloemfontein.

A prolific points-scorer, Makhaza is regarded as one of the most exciting young talents in South African rugby. He was even invited to the Springboks’ second alignment camp in Cape Town, although he is yet to make his senior debut.

Whether Rassie Erasmus will include him in the next alignment camp remains to be seen. However, it’s unlikely that he’ll be in the Springbok mix this season – not due to a lack of talent, but rather because he still needs to prove himself at a level above Varsity Cup.

Makhaza will face tough competition at the Cheetahs. The team boasts an exciting group of outside backs, including Prince Nkabinde, Michael Annies, and Cohen Jasper – the current first-choice wingers.

Speaking to OFM Sport, Makhaza said being invited to the Springbok camp has motivated him, but he’s focused on taking things step by step – and the first step is earning his place at the Cheetahs.

“I think you’ve summed it up well – just being part of that camp is a huge motivator,” Makhaza said. “Being in that environment gives you a real sense of what’s expected from you as a player and as a person.

“It’s incredibly inspiring to be included, because it shows that you’re on the radar. But now the onus is on me to perform in the Currie Cup. First and foremost, I need to make the team and ensure that I deliver when I get the chance.

“If I do what the coaches have asked and play to my best, then I believe the sky isn't the limit – there’s more beyond that.

“For now, it’s all about making sure I crack the Currie Cup squad, knowing that I have the backing of the coaches. It’s just about proving myself and playing my best rugby.”

The Cheetahs will kick off their Currie Cup preparations on 4 July, when they face the Suzuki Griquas in Bultfontein in a warm-up match. The following week, they’ll take on Georgia in Bloemfontein, before heading to Wellington for their opening Currie Cup clash against the Boland Cavaliers.
