South Africa’s United Rugby Championship franchises produced a clean sweep of victories this past weekend, with the Sharks, Bulls, Lions and Stormers all getting the job done in a series of hard-fought encounters across Friday and Saturday.

Each win came with its own narrative, but collectively it underlined the strength and growing momentum of the South African teams as the competition edges closer to the knockout phase.

The Sharks got things rolling with a gritty 21-15 victory over Cardiff, in a match defined more by resilience than flair. In challenging conditions, the Durban side were forced to dig deep, grinding their way to a result built on defensive discipline and territorial pressure. It was far from a polished performance, but the Sharks showed composure when it mattered most, managing the game effectively in the closing stages to seal a crucial win.

For a side that has battled inconsistency this season, the result could prove significant. It not only keeps their playoff hopes alive, but also highlights a growing maturity in tight contests - something that has been lacking at times during the campaign.

In Pretoria, the Bulls were involved in one of the toughest games of the round, edging Munster 34-31 in a high-intensity thriller. The home side had to withstand a fierce fightback from the Irish outfit, who crossed for more tries but ultimately fell just short.

The Bulls’ victory was anchored by their physical dominance and clinical kicking, with key moments - including sharp finishing and accurate goal-kicking - proving decisive. Even when Munster surged late in the game, the Bulls held firm, showing both attacking firepower and defensive steel. It was a performance that reinforced their credentials as serious contenders, particularly given their ability to close out matches under pressure.

The Lions, meanwhile, delivered one of the most entertaining performances of the weekend, powering their way to a 42-26 victory over the Dragons in Johannesburg. True to their attacking identity, the Lions played with tempo and ambition, scoring freely while also showing improved control in key phases.

Their ability to shift gears and capitalise on opportunities stood out, as they turned pressure into points with clinical efficiency. Reports from the round highlighted how the Lions “shifted gears” to pull away, underlining their attacking depth and growing confidence.

This result further strengthens their position in the race for the top eight and suggests they are peaking at the right time of the season.

Rounding off the quartet of wins, the Stormers secured a convincing 33-14 victory against Edinburgh, continuing their push near the top of the standings. While not without its challenges, the Cape side showed their class, particularly in the latter stages of the match.

After an error-strewn start, the Stormers produced a strong final quarter to take control and ultimately pull away from their opponents. Their ability to absorb pressure and then strike decisively once momentum shifted speaks to their experience and quality.

The result keeps them firmly in contention near the summit of the table, where they remain one of the most consistent teams in the competition.

Taken together, the four victories mark a significant moment for South African rugby in the URC. Not only did all four sides secure wins in the same round, but they did so in different ways - from tight defensive battles to high-scoring encounters - showcasing the versatility within the country’s franchises.

As the playoff race intensifies, momentum will be everything. The Bulls and Stormers appear well positioned near the top, while the Lions continue to surge and the Sharks are beginning to find their rhythm.

If this weekend is anything to go by, the South African challenge in this year’s URC is very real - and growing stronger with every round as the playoffs looms.
