Workhorse Wegner targets Currie Cup return─── MORGAN PIEK 08:56 Thu, 05 Jun 2025

The Toyota Cheetahs stalwart Carl Wegner is targeting a return to action during the 2025 Currie Cup, which kicks off next month – but he’s taking a cautious approach after a serious injury.
The veteran lock has been out since sustaining a significant hamstring injury in the Cheetahs’ emphatic 106–7 win over the Border Bulldogs in the SA Cup at the beginning of May.
His absence stretched the squad’s depth in the second row, and his return will bring a major boost. Beyond his line-out expertise, the Ficksburg-born workhorse is known for his relentless work rate, powerful carries, and strong leadership on the park.

Wegner, who started his rehabilitation this past Monday, told OFM Sport that patience will be key in his recovery. “I’ve been on crutches for four weeks now. I started my rehab and programme on Monday,” said Wegner.
“The goal is to get back during the Currie Cup – maybe not right at the start, but I definitely want to feature in a few matches. That’s the focus now for me, JP du Toit (physio), and Doc (Tarryn Thomas).
“It’s tough picking up an injury just as one competition ends, especially with the excitement around Free State rugby at the moment. You feel like you’re missing out, not contributing the way you’d like – and that’s never a great feeling.”
While he’s appreciated the short break, Wegner admitted it’s been frustrating, especially after recently signing a two-year contract extension. At 34, he’s also aware that proper recovery and conditioning are more important than ever.
“The break was nice, but I’d much rather take two weeks off and get back into it than be off for four weeks and then still have to do rehab.
“It’s a long road back. This wasn’t just a standard tear – it was nearly torn off the bone. So I’ll have to manage it carefully, otherwise it could become a recurring problem.

“After signing the new deal, you don’t want to be dealing with constant injuries or setbacks every few weeks.
“I’m really keen to get back on the pitch as soon as possible, but I know I need to take care of myself if I want to perform and keep contributing to the team.”
The Cheetahs begin their Currie Cup campaign on 27 July when they face the Boland Cavaliers in Wellington.
