Springbok hopeful Makhaza reports for duty at the Cheetahs─── MORGAN PIEK 16:55 Mon, 30 Jun 2025

The Toyota Cheetahs’ new winger, Ntokozo Makhaza, reported for duty in Bloemfontein on Monday, officially starting his journey with his new team.
The exciting and versatile speedster is already on the Springboks’ radar, even before making his Currie Cup debut.
Originally from the Free State, Makhaza was schooled in Durban and later attended the University of Cape Town, where he made a name for himself playing for the Ikey Tigers in the Varsity Cup. He was such a standout performer at the Green Mile that he was named Varsity Cup Player of the Year for two consecutive seasons, playing a key role in UCT’s 2025 title win.

In addition to his blistering pace, Makhaza is renowned for his deadly accurate kicking boot. Just last month, he was called up to the Springbok alignment camp in preparation for the match against the Barbarians, as well as the upcoming Tests against Italy and Georgia.
Although he didn’t make the final squad, the experience was invaluable.
Speaking to OFM Sport, Makhaza said he was warmly welcomed on his first day in Bloemfontein by both the players and the coaching staff. Judging from day one, he’s excited about what lies ahead.
“It’s been great. We started nice and early with breakfast with the boys, followed by a team meeting and a clarity session.
“The players and coaches have been very welcoming. So far, so good,” said Makhaza. “I’m really looking forward to the rest of the week.”
The fleet-footed back added that joining the Cheetahs is a definite step up from university rugby, but not without some familiar elements.
Always be ready
“It’s great to see some familiar faces, guys I used to play against. But like you said, this is a different level. Everyone here is a professional, so there’s a clear sense of professionalism.
“In terms of detail and preparation, things are quite similar to what we did at UCT, which makes the transition easier. Still, it’s an adjustment, it’s a new environment.”
Reflecting on his brief time with the Springboks, Makhaza said his biggest takeaway was the importance of always being ready.

“Always be prepared, that’s what I learnt. Whether I’m training at UCT or with the Cheetahs, you never know when you’ll be called up.
“The biggest lesson I took from that camp is to be dialled in at training and give it my best, because how you train is ultimately how you play. Now I’m a bit more intentional with everything I do, a bit more focused, because opportunities can come at any time.”
There’s a strong chance that Makhaza could make his first appearance in a Cheetahs jersey on Friday in their warm-up game against the Suzuki Griquas in Bultfontein. The match at Carpe Diem Park kicks off at 13:00.
