Griquas outclass Cheetahs to reach the Currie Cup final─── MORGAN PIEK 23:36 Sat, 13 Sep 2025

The Suzuki Griquas will face the Lions in Johannesburg in the 2025 Currie Cup final after producing a dominant performance against the Toyota Cheetahs in Kimberley on Saturday night in the second semi-final.
The Peacock Blues outplayed their neighbours in every department to book their first appearance in the world’s oldest domestic rugby competition final since 2022.
In what was a memorable evening for Kimberley, the Griquas overpowered the Cheetahs 25-5 at Suzuki Stadium, in their first Currie Cup semi-final at home since 1998.

The Griquas’ defence was on another level, while their mauls were simply outstanding, giving the visitors no way back. Their consistency throughout the campaign has been key, with coach Pieter Bergh having built something special over the past four years.
Tries by lock Albert Liebenberg and winger Dylan Maart gave the hosts a 12-5 lead at half-time. At that stage the Cheetahs were still very much in the contest.
In the second half, Maart completed his brace, while seasoned flyhalf George Whitehead slotted two penalties and a second conversion to put the game beyond reach.
The Cheetahs had their moments, but once again struggled to turn opportunities into points — a story of their campaign. To be fair, they’ve endured a challenging year and are in a similar position to where the Griquas were a few seasons ago. Free State blooded plenty of youngsters this year, but the real difference between the two teams is the experience the Griquas have gained, which the Cheetahs are still working towards.
Griquas captain Cebo Dlamini told OFM Sport he was proud of what his side has achieved this season.
“We found a way this season, and it’s always a privilege and an honour to reach a final. We’ll definitely look at where we went wrong today, but also take a lot of positives out of our defence — I think we really managed that well,” said Dlamini.

He added that the team’s strength lies in their unity.
“Our group has been together for three years now, with a few new guys coming in. That unity really brings the team together. A unified team will fight for each other — and that’s exactly what we’ll need in the final.”
The powerful tighthead prop admitted that the URC-stacked Lions would be tough opponents in Johannesburg, but said they were up for the challenge.
“They’re a good side, but as you said, it’s a final. We’ll stick to our processes, stick to our strengths, and we’re looking forward to the challenge.”

Earlier on Saturday, in the first semi-final at Ellis Park, the Lions thrashed the Boland Cavaliers 67-19 to book a second consecutive home final.
SA Rugby is yet to confirm the kick-off time for the final at Ellis Park.
