The versatile Springbok back Damian Willemse is expecting an aerial battle from Italy as one of the key contests when the two teams lock horns on Saturday in Turin.

It will be the third time this year they clash, with the Springboks having won the first two Tests back in South Africa. Last week against Australia, the Azzurri showed just how dangerous they can be, and they would love nothing more than a Springbok scalp before the Six Nations kicks off early in 2026.

For the Boks, the main priority is to continue their unbeaten run on the End-of-Year tour as they look to rack up valuable ranking points ahead of the draw for the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia.

South Africa are ranked number one, and they want to maintain that standing heading into the draw, which will help ensure a better pool for the global showpiece down under.

While the Boks have lost just once to Italy in the past, a 20-18 defeat in Florence back in 2016, Willemse warned that a fired-up Italian side will test them in all aspects of the game.

“Italy has really built their team well,” said Willemse.

“They defend and attack strongly, and they have great players who can pull strings, so it’s going to be a big challenge, especially in the air. Set-piece-wise, they are a good mauling team and can take it up front, and their wings can get up high, so they have a solid team throughout.”

“We managed to get the wins in Pretoria and then in Gqeberha, but I’ve also played for the Stormers in Italy against Zebre, Parma, and Benetton, and they have players who have really stepped up.

“They are also well coached, so it’s going to be a huge battle on the field, and we are looking forward to it.”

Meanwhile, the Springboks will be without lock Lood de Jager for the rest of the End-of-Year tour. The 2019 Rugby World Cup winner received a lengthy four-match suspension for the red card shown by Angus Gardner for his tackle on Thomas Ramos during the 38th minute of the 32-17 victory against France in Paris.

De Jager appeared before an independent disciplinary hearing on Tuesday. The former Cheetah will now miss the remainder of the Springboks’ fixtures and is unavailable for the Tests against Italy, Ireland, and Wales, as well as a Japan Rugby League One fixture for his club, the Saitama Wild Knights.

Saturday’s Test between Italy and the Springboks at the in Turin will kick off at 14:40.
