Dobbo extends stay at Stormers─── MORGAN PIEK 07:58 Fri, 02 Jan 2026
Director of Rugby John Dobson has committed his future to the Stormers after signing a four-year contract extension that will keep him at the helm through to the end of the ambitious Project 2029.
The extension is a vote of confidence in Dobson’s leadership and the work he has done since taking over as head coach in 2020. It also ensures continuity as the Stormers push ahead with Project 2029, a long-term plan aimed at building sustainable success across all levels of the union.
A proud Cape Town native, Dobson has been part of the Stormers Rugby system since 2010 and is widely regarded as one of the driving forces behind the franchise’s modern resurgence. His achievements include guiding the side to Currie Cup glory in 2017 and, most notably, to the inaugural Vodacom United Rugby Championship title in 2022, a landmark triumph for the union.

Dobson was appointed Director of Rugby in 2024, taking responsibility for the entire rugby operation, from junior pathways to the senior professional squad. Since then, clear progress has been made towards the goals of Project 2029.
The Stormers have successfully attracted some of the country’s top junior talent while also strengthening the senior squad with carefully selected signings from outside the region. On the field, the momentum is undeniable.
The Stormers have won all nine of their matches this season and are riding a wave of confidence, with a capacity crowd expected at Cape Town Stadium this weekend. There is a growing belief that the team is entering a new golden era.

Dobson said he feels energised by the challenge ahead and encouraged by the backing he has received. “With the support of our owners, we’ve been able to build real depth in the squad, and that has already translated into positive results this season,” he said.
“At the same time, we’re investing in the future by bringing in the best junior talent in the country.” He also praised the unity within the organisation, highlighting the contribution of the coaching and support staff.
“We have incredible people at this club. Everyone is aligned and pulling in the same direction. The coaches and support staff are world-class professionals who always put the Stormers first,” Dobson said.

Determined to see Project 2029 through, Dobson described the role as his dream job.
“I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to do what I love and to help build something special for our supporters. The rugby heritage and talent in this region is unmatched, and I’ll do everything I can to ensure the Stormers are competing at the very top of club rugby.”
The unbeaten Stormers will put their record on the line on Saturday at 18:00 when they host the Bulls at Cape Town Stadium in a highly anticipated North–South derby.
