Toyota Cheetahs coach believes team will benefit from two tough matches in EPCR Challenge Cup─── ILSE SMALBERGER 14:04 Wed, 07 Jan 2026
Toyota Cheetah’s coach Frans Steyn says he believes his team will benefit from the two tough EPCR Challenge Cup matches that will be played over the next two weekends.
The Cheetahs play Ulster on Sunday (11/1) in Amsterdam and Racing92 in Paris the following Sunday. Steyn told OFM News the Cheetahs need proper game time and opportunity to test combinations under pressure.
But the next two weeks are also an opportunity for the Cheetahs to show what they are made of.
“It was Christmas and all that in the New Year. And we didn’t play rugby during this time. So it’s always difficult getting the guys to match level,” he said.
“We did our best, I think, but that's what it is. We need to make the best of it. Unfortunately, there were a couple of injuries as a result of the previous trip, but as usual, it’s an opportunity for new players to come into the system.”
Regular captain Victor Sekekete is not in Amsterdam due to a facial fracture sustained earlier in the competition. Former UFS Shimlas skipper Pierre Uys is also unavailable, as he too is sidelined with a facial injury.

Adding to the injury woes, energetic lock Juan Venter is out with a shoulder problem. In total, there are seven changes to the squad as the Cheetahs opt to rotate their resources.
Former Junior Springbok hooker Juan Smal will tour for the first time this season and is expected to make his debut, while tighthead prop Ben Pitout also earns his maiden call-up. The pair replaces Vernon Paulo and Tielman Nieuwoudt.
Steyn said his team is putting the two defeats in rounds 1 and 2 of the competition firmly behind them. He said the team is making progress and has what it takes to play in the big leagues.

However, continuity and game time remain a problem. “I think we've made massive strides in the last year. I think the squad is coming along nicely. I just think we need continuity.
“We need game time. When the SA Cup starts, we'll get proper game time week in, week out. So hopefully with all of that, when we hit the Curry Cup, it will be smooth sailing, and the combinations will be settled.”
Sunday’s match against Ulster will be played at the NRCA Stadium in Amsterdam, and kick-off is at 17:15.
