Griquas stars extend their stay in Kimberley─── MORGAN PIEK 07:57 Fri, 27 Feb 2026
The Suzuki Griquas have received a timely boost just over a week before their 2026 season gets underway with the start of the SA Cup campaign.
The defending Currie Cup champions have extended the contracts of two of their standout players ahead of their season opener in Kimberley.
Exciting centre Zane Bester has put pen to paper on a new deal, committing his future to the Peacock Blues as he continues to grow his rugby career in the Northern Cape. The Currie Cup winner joined the Griquas two years ago straight out of the Varsity Cup, where he represented the University of the Free State Shimlas, and has now signed on for a further 24 months.

In more good news for the Kimberley outfit, fleet-footed fullback Cameron Hufke has also extended his stay in the Diamond City. Since arriving from the Boland Cavaliers in 2024, Hufke has become a key figure at the back with his attacking flair and composure under pressure.
The 27-year-old former Currie Cup First Division Player of the Year made his mark in last year’s historic Currie Cup final, scoring the opening try as the Griquas stunned the Lions 27–25 at Ellis Park in Johannesburg to lift the coveted Sir Donald Currie Trophy for the first time in 55 years.

Bester told OFM Sport there was never any doubt about remaining in Kimberley, crediting the union for giving him his first real opportunity at top-level rugby.
“It was definitely a no-brainer for me,” said Bester.
“I’ve really enjoyed my time here in Kimberley – the team environment and the culture are honestly the best.
“I’m looking forward to the next two years, through to September 2028, and continuing the journey here.

“I’m loving every moment, and with a lot of the guys also committed until then, it makes it even more exciting. I’m really grateful and very excited about what lies ahead.”
In light of the star winger, Dylan Maart's looming permanent departure from the Griquas, the extension of Bester and Hufke is certainly welcome news, especially have defending champions, they have to requalify for the Currie Cup Premier Division.
The Griquas kick-off their SA Cup campaign next Saturday when they host the Leopards in Kimberley. This opening round fixture at the Suzuki Stadium will kick-off at 15:00.
