Frans Steyn has thrown his full backing behind flyhalf Ethan Wentzel, insisting the talented playmaker remains central to the Toyota Cheetahs’ plans going forward.

Injuries have restricted Wentzel’s game time for more than a year, but he showed flashes of his class when coming off the bench in last week’s 26–17 win over the SWD Eagles in George, adding a noticeable spark to the Cheetahs’ attack.

Wentzel enjoyed a breakthrough campaign in 2024, playing a pivotal role in the Cheetahs’ run to the Currie Cup semi-finals. Although they went down 43–34 to the Lions at Ellis Park Stadium, the young flyhalf stood tall on the day, scoring two tries and adding a pair of conversions in a standout individual performance.

Earlier that same year, Wentzel underlined his pedigree on the varsity stage, steering the University of the Free State Shimlas to their second-ever Varsity Cup title. He held his nerve in the final moments, slotting a clutch penalty after the hooter to edge out the University of Cape Town Ikeys in a dramatic final in Bloemfontein.

Since that breakout year, however, injuries have taken their toll, inevitably denting both rhythm and confidence. At his best, Wentzel is a fearless competitor capable of going toe-to-toe with the top names in the game - something he proved in 2024 when he finished among the leading points-scorers.

This season, he started in the 34–24 defeat to the Boland Cavaliers, with his only other appearance coming as a substitute in George.

Speaking to OFM Sport, Steyn emphasised the importance of getting the 25-year-old back to full match sharpness and, crucially, restoring his belief.

“He’s an exciting player, especially on attack, and it will be interesting to see how he develops from here,” said Steyn.

“With Clayton Blommetjies around, he’s got a great opportunity to learn, particularly at fullback.

“But the key for me is getting Ethan back on the park and rebuilding his confidence to where it was during his Shimlas days.

“When he first arrived, he believed he could do anything - we need to get him back to that mindset because we all know just how brilliant he can be when he’s confident.”

Wentzel could well feature again this weekend when the Cheetahs take on the Valke at Barnard Stadium in Kempton Park, with Blommetjies among those who may be rested. It remains to be seen where exactly Wentzel will slot in for the must-win clash on the East Rand.

Saturday’s game between the Valke and Cheetahs at the Barnard Stadium will kick-off at 15:00.
