The Lions came agonisingly close to pulling off a remarkable comeback against Glasgow Warriors on Friday night, but a late try by Ollie Smith and a final-minute penalty saw them suffer a 29-20 defeat in Scotland.

Trailing 19-3 at the break, the Johannesburg-based side looked to be heading for another disappointing away result. However, a vastly improved second-half display saw them score three unanswered tries to take the lead and put the hosts under enormous pressure.

For a while, a memorable upset appeared to be on the cards, but Glasgow showed their experience to turn the game around in the closing stages.

The result extends the Lions’ winless run away from home to 19 matches, with 17 defeats and two draws. They have not recorded an away victory since 2024.

The emotional circumstances surrounding the team cannot be overlooked. The sudden death of teammate Hyron Andrews two weeks ago, shortly before their Champions Cup encounter against La Rochelle, had a profound impact on the squad. After a lengthy and emotionally demanding European tour, the first-half performance perhaps reflected a team struggling to find its usual energy.

Glasgow, despite making several changes to their starting line-up, were considerably sharper and more clinical in the opening 40 minutes.

Dan Lancaster was instrumental in getting the hosts going, producing a perfectly weighted cross-kick for Fergus Watson, who beat two defenders before crossing the tryline in the 10th minute.

Lancaster then exploited space around the fringes just before the half-hour mark, combining with George Horne before receiving the return pass to score under the posts.

Horne was involved again shortly afterwards, breaking through the Lions’ defence and creating the opportunity for Jack Singleton to score Glasgow’s third try. At 19-3, the visitors had plenty of work to do.

However, the Lions returned with renewed purpose after the interval, bringing greater physicality and making better use of their forward pack.

Springbok scrumhalf Morné van den Berg got the comeback underway, darting through after a powerful lineout drive. Kelly Mpeku then produced an excellent interception before offloading to Siba Mahashe, who finished in the corner.

The visitors completed their turnaround with ten minutes remaining when hooker Morné Brandon powered over following another effective lineout maul.

Their lead lasted only six minutes, with Smith crossing in the corner before Horne added a penalty in the dying moments after referee Andrea Piardi ruled that Glasgow still had an advantage to play. It was a bitter ending for the Lions, who will now return home for a month's break before regrouping in December.

Scorers:

Glasgow Warriors: Tries - Fergus Watson, Dan Lancaster, Jack Singleton, Ollie Smith Conv.-  George Horne 3 Pen. - Horne

Lions: Tries - Morné van den Berg, Siba Mahashe, Morné Brandon Conv. - Boeta Chamberlain Pen. - Chris Smith
