Sharks land major coup with Libbok signing─── MORGAN PIEK 08:29 Thu, 05 Nov 2026
The Sharks have pulled off a major signing coup by securing the services of Springbok flyhalf Manie Libbok, who will return to Durban on a multi-year contract from July 2027.
The Rugby World Cup winner, who has earned more than 30 Test caps, is regarded as one of South Africa's most creative attacking players. His arrival is another significant step in the Sharks' plans to build a squad capable of competing for major honours under head coach JP Pietersen.
Libbok's rugby journey began in the Bulls system before he enjoyed a brief stint with the Sharks during the 2020/21 season. He subsequently established himself as a key figure at the Stormers, helping the Cape side win the 2021/22 United Rugby Championship title.

The flyhalf also enjoyed considerable individual success, finishing as the competition's leading points scorer in consecutive seasons.
He is currently playing in Japan for Hanazono Kintetsu Liners but is excited about returning to South African rugby and becoming part of the Sharks' new direction.
"For this next chapter of my career, there is no club I would rather be joining than the Sharks. This is an iconic club with a proud history, there's real excitement about the future, and I want to be part of what's being built here," Libbok said.
He added that discussions with Pietersen convinced him that Durban was the right destination.

"When I chatted with JP and heard his vision for the team, I knew straight away that there's something special developing here. You can feel the new energy and the culture building, and I want to be part of it.
"I can't wait to pull on the black and white jersey, work with the coaches and my teammates, and give everything I've got for the badge and our supporters."
Pietersen believes Libbok's attacking ability and experience will be important assets as the Sharks continue developing their playing identity.
"Manie is a game-changer and a playmaker. That's exactly the kind of player we want driving our game," he said.

The coach was particularly impressed by the flyhalf's hunger to contribute beyond simply joining the squad.
"He doesn't just want to join the Sharks; he wants to help build something here with the rest of the squad."
Chief executive Shaun Bryans said securing a player of Libbok's calibre underlines the club's ambition to challenge for trophies while continuing to develop talent from within its structures.
Bryans added that Libbok's decision reflected his confidence in the coaching team and the direction the club is taking.
Libbok will complete his commitments in Japan before joining the Sharks in July 2027, adding international experience and considerable attacking creativity to Pietersen's plans for the future.
