Marx officially set to join the Bulls─── MORGAN PIEK 09:51 Thu, 05 Nov 2026
The Bulls have secured a major signature with Springbok hooker Malcolm Marx set to join the Pretoria-based franchise.
The acquisition of the World Rugby Player of the Year represents another significant statement of intent from the Bulls as they continue to assemble a squad capable of challenging for major silverware under head coach Johan Ackermann.
Marx's arrival follows the recent signing of fellow Springbok forward Kwagga Smith, further strengthening what is already an imposing Bulls pack.

The 32-year-old is among the most decorated players in South African rugby, having lifted the Rugby World Cup with the Springboks in 2019 and 2023. He has also established himself as one of the country's most influential forwards, boasting 94 Test appearances and 29 tries – a record for a forward in Springbok history.
Currently on duty with the national team in Europe, Marx continues to add to an international career that has firmly established him as one of the world's leading hookers.
For the experienced front-rower, the move to Pretoria also represents a return to familiar territory. Having grown up in Johannesburg, Marx made his name with the Lions, where he became a key figure during one of the franchise's most successful periods.

He played an instrumental role in the Johannesburg side's run to three consecutive Super Rugby finals between 2016 and 2018, earning several individual accolades along the way. His performances were built on relentless work at the breakdown, outstanding accuracy at the lineout and powerful ball-carrying ability.
Marx has spent the past six years playing his franchise rugby in Japan, but his return to South Africa will also reunite him with Ackermann, under whom he first made his breakthrough at senior level.
Ackermann expressed his delight at securing the services of a player he has known since his teenage years, having witnessed his development from a promising youngster into one of the world's premier hookers.

Johan Ackermann - Bulls
The Bulls coach previously compared Marx's potential to that of former Springbok great Bismarck du Plessis. While the comparison attracted some criticism at the time, Marx has since gone on to establish himself among the best in the business.
“He’s one of the hardest workers I coached, someone with great integrity too. He excelled and has stayed humble, always putting his team first,” said Ackermann.
“I have so much respect for him, grateful that his rugby journey has come full circle with me. I am most proud of the man and the person and the husband and son he is for his family.”
Meanwhile, Marx has been named in the Springboks' starting XV for Saturday's Nations Championship Test against Italy in Turin. Kick-off at the Allianz Stadium is at 13:40.
