The 19-year-old man accused of murdering and mutilating a 21-year-old Welkom student has in a twist of events abandoned his bail application altogether.
Obed Leshoro has since his much-publicised arrest on May 28 made numerous appearances in the Welkom Magistrate’s Court and was expected to formally apply for bail in his latest appearance.
The body of Naledi Lethoba from Bothaville was found nine days prior to Leshoro’s arrest in an open field in an area known as Dagbreek in Welkom.
OFM News correspondent Michael Tlhakudi was in court and spoke to the deceased’s aunt Makomeng Nyakane who says the family is struggling to deal with the student’s death.
She says the family only wants justice for the gruesome murder. Lethoba’s body was found with the knife lodged in her neck, her body partly burned and mutilated to such a degree that it is reported her parents identified her by looking at her hands.
There are conflicting reports regarding how the two were acquainted.
It was initially reported they were both students at Goldfields TVET College, however, it has since been revealed that they were not in fact attending the same institution.
