Commuter safety is in the spotlight following the eruption of chaotic and violent scenes between minibus taxi drivers in Klerskdorp in the North West yesterday.

Police spokesperson, Amogelang Mabihi, says a fight between Jouberton and Khuma taxi operators allegedly broke out over computer-related issues yesterday.

She says one person was reported dead after being stabbed in a fight between three people but says the incident cannot be linked to the taxi violence in that area yet as details are still sketchy.

Residents have since taken to social media, including Facebook, to vent their frustration and raise concerns about the violence in the area.

Local taxi drivers allegedly used dangerous weapons to fight one another. Meanwhile, Mabihi says no shooting was reported and she cannot confirm any shooting during the incidents.

In September 2018, at least twelve people thought to be taxi drivers, were arrested for public violence and looting, following clashes with foreign nationals in that area.

Police spokesperson, Sabata Mokgwabone, then told OFM News the 12 were arrested following a clash between taxi drivers and foreign nationals in Pienaarsdorp.

Various properties, thought to be occupied by Nigerian nationals, were set alight, allegedly as taxi drivers believed one of their colleagues was killed by a foreign national.

Meanwhile, just a few kilometers from Klerksdorp in Kanana near Orkney, local meter taxis are allegedly going after gang members thought to be involved in criminal activities in that area.
