Samwu won't take part in 'salary cut challenge'

Samwu won't take part in 'salary cut challenge' | News Article

The South African Municipal Workers’ Union says it won't be taking part in the 'salary cut challenge'.

This was in response to a suggestion that the Ekurhuleni municipality take a five percent salary cut for three months.

Samwu's Koena Ramatlou says workers can't afford to earn less.

"Workers are not going to be participating in any tournament that is meant to deal with salaries," said Ramatlou.

"There is no discussion in Ekurhuleni that involves members of Samwu or municipal workers about any form of cut of salaries."

Ramatlou said employees are welcome to make a donation on their own.

"It’s a personal decision. We don’t want to stop employees from doing their own gestures," he said.
