Aids-related deaths in SA decline─── 16:53 Thu, 09 Jul 2020
The number of people who have died from AIDS-related illnesses in South Africa has gone down over the past 18-years.
Statistician-General, Risenga Maluleke released the country's population report, tracking statistical changes from 2002.
According to Stats SA, the total number of people living with HIV is estimated at approximately 7.8-million in 2020.
The proportion of AIDS-related deaths has declined by almost half, from 30.6-percent to just over 15-percent.
"In recent years, South Africa has moved from a country suffering mostly mortalities from communicable diseases such as tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS – which are often concentrated at younger ages – to scenarios where most causes of death are attributable to non-communicable diseases, manifesting at late ages, such as strokes or heart disease (MCOD, 2017)," Maluleke said.
