Ramaphosa said he has asked the Minister of Higher Education and Innovation, Blade Nzimande, to put together a team of scientists to begin the process of developing our own vaccine to deal with this and future pandemics. 

This was revealed on Thursday in his reply to debates about the state of the nation address.

The country already has a state-owned pharmaceutical company known as “Ketlaphela”, which was established in 2012 with the initial aim of producing antiretrovirals.
