SIU vows to release #PPE report─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 07:47 Thu, 08 Jul 2021
The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) has committed to conclude ongoing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) investigations by the end of August 2021.
The unit has confirmed investigations linked to R7.6 billion are underway. The SIU has indicated that most of the contracts probed are in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal, followed by North West.
SIU head, Andy Mothibi, said corruption has a negative impact on the government’s ability to deliver basic services to citizens and they will stop at nothing to ensure accountability. His latest report further indicates that eleven contracts to the value of approximately R11 million are under investigation in the Free State.
OFM News in February reported that the SIU had confirmed several Covid-19 PPE tender corruption allegations were under investigation in Central South Africa.
Mothibi said during a media briefing a total of 11 fraud and corruption allegations relating to PPE were under investigation in the Free State, 12 in North West, and one in the Northern Cape. His report indicates the number of those under investigation in North West stood at 112 by the end of April.
He said several investigations involving officials from the Free State Treasury were underway, and had made a referral to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) over one senior manager within the Provincial Treasury.
Investigative reports involving the Free State Treasury and local municipalities are amongst those expected next month.
