Ramaphosa calls for calm as #Zuma protests spiral─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 05:38 Mon, 12 Jul 2021
President Cyril Ramaphosa has called for calm in the provinces of KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng where protest actions have flared up.
Addressing the country on Sunday night following a meeting of the National Coronavirus Command Council, Ramaphosa said ongoing protests in the country pose a threat to the country's health and economic development.
His statement comes amidst allegations that the protests in the two provinces might spiral to other provinces. The protests referred to by many as the pro-Zuma protests, started in his homestead in Nkandla, with his supporters are protesting against his incarceration following the Constitutional Court ruling which declared that he is guilty of contempt of court.
Several vehicles have been torched and shops looted in the two provinces, with the media reportedly also under attack. Ramaphosa called for calm and warned that criminal charges will be instituted against those inciting violence and lawlessness.
