The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research's (CSIR) senior researcher, Dr Ridhwaan Suliman, says he is encouraged by the declining number of new coronavirus cases and deaths being recorded in South Africa.

The coronavirus test positivity rate remains well below five percent – the rate at which the spread of the virus is considered to be under control.

The NICD says 25 people died from Covid-19 in the latest 24 hour reporting period.

More than 88 000 people have died from Covid-19 since the start of the pandemic – but the real death toll could be much higher given the large number of excess deaths recorded since the start of 2020.

Dr Suliman says things are looking good in South Africa after the third wave – but a fourth wave could be coming towards the end of the year.
