Almost 10 000 people were brutalised and sexually violated over just three months in South Africa.

Police minister Bheki Cele recently availed rape crime statistics for South Africa from July to September 2021.

Cele says 9 556 people were raped in this period, and referred to this as a disgrace and deeply disturbing.

He adds this is an increase of 634 cases, amounting to a 7,1% increase compared to the previous reporting period.

Cele says a sample of 6 144 rape cases revealed that 3 951 incidents took place at the home of the victim or the home of the rapist.

Liquor and drugs were involved in 1 383 of the rape cases.

Cele says 400 rape cases were domestic violence related.

The Temba Police Station in Gauteng, Thohoyandou Station in Limpopo and the Eastern Cape’s Lusikisiki and Inanda Police Stations in KwaZulu-Natal recorded the highest incidences of rape.

“These statistics show that the victims are often violated by people they know and trust, in the comfort of their own homes or in places where they thought they would be safe,” says Cele.
