Mbalula warns corrupt Transport officials─── 08:30 Tue, 04 Oct 2022
Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula says the number of arrests being made for corruption proves the state is no longer willing to sit idly by while the coffers are being looted.
Mbalula made the remarks at the launch of Transport Month in Pretoria on Monday.
He addressed the media at the refurbished Pienaarspoort/Pretoria line, which had to be closed due to vandalism committed at the height of Covid-19.
“When we wake up - every day - someone has been arrested for corruption,” Mbalula said.
“That shows that the moment of truth has arrived. There is no longer stealing with impunity thinking that the state will not intervene.
“You steal and there will be consequences and you will be arrested as it happens. It doesn’t matter who you are or where you come from or what your political credentials are. If you are stealing from our people, you will be arrested because none of us were sent here to come and steal.”
Nine people were arrested by the Hawks in Nelson Mandela Bay last week for alleged tender fraud worth some R56 million. The tender is related to work on a rapid bus system in 2010.
“We have introduced forensic audits where we suspect corruption,” Mbalula said.
“And those forensic audits will be concluded now, and the result will be made public, and the reports will be handed over to authorities to execute. Those who are affected - we will deal with them decisively.”
