Police have launched an investigation into an attempted murder case after controversial North West businessman Brown Mogotsi reportedly survived an attempt on his life in Vosloorus on Monday night (3/11).

According to preliminary information, multiple gunshots were fired at a vehicle believed to be driving Mogotsi. The alleged attack took place near a popular local venue in Vosloorus. It’s understood the businessman narrowly escaped unharmed.

National police spokesperson Brig. Athlenda Mathe confirmed the police were alerted to the incident around 22:00 on Monday by officials from a private security company.

“The police immediately dispatched their team. On arrival, officers found North West businessman Brown Mogotsi together with an official from a private security company, who alleged that a shooting had occurred involving another vehicle on the scene – a white bakkie.”

“But he did not know the model or the individuals who started shooting at his vehicle while he was allegedly inside,” said Mathe.

Mogotsi appeared shaken by the incident. “We encouraged him to open a case, but he alleged he was traumatised at that time, and he did not feel safe.

He promised to visit the local police station at 08:00 on Tuesday to formally open a case. “We are investigating a case of attempted murder for now. We have seized the vehicle,” she said.

A team of forensic experts was dispatched to the scene to collect evidence. “We can confirm that our criminal local centre did attend to the scene, our forensic experts, fingerprint experts, and so on.

“Ballistic experts did attend to the scene, and we are investigating a case of attempted murder. I’m told by the acting station commander that Mr Mogotsi promised to avail himself at the police station,” said Mathe.

Details surrounding the incident remain unclear – police will only know more once Mogotsi opens a case, she added. It also remains uncertain whether he was travelling alone or with someone.

The police have confirmed they know who owns the car Mogotsi was travelling in but have declined to share further details while the investigation is ongoing.

Mogotsi, a businessman from Mahikeng, has been in the spotlight in recent months for his alleged links to senior police officials accused of corruption and interference in investigations.

Last month, his business premises were raided by law enforcement agencies. Following that raid, Mogotsi told the media he was willing to testify before the Madlanga commission about what he described as deep-rooted corruption and criminal networks within South Africa’s justice system.
